Bruins vs Habs: The indepth and insanely great series preview!

With a 24-7 lifetime advantage of playoff series wins, the Habs take on the Bruins for the 32nd time in the NHL playoffs. These two teams have had many historic battles in the postseason, especially in recent years. It wasn’t long ago when the #1 Bruins in 2002, featuring the likes of Sergei Samsonov (when he was good), Joe Thornton, Bill Guerin, Brian Rolston and Glen Murray, faced off against the #8 seeded Montreal Canadiens, whose leading scorer Yanic Perreault had 56 points, and whose goalie, a pre-propecia Jose Theodore, …

Bruins vs Habs: Nothing else to say…

That matchups have been talked about. The players analyzed. The predictions have been made. Now, all we can do is just wait for puckdrop.
When the game gets underway tonight at the TD Banknorth Garden, a new chapter in this rivalry will be waiting to be written.
There’s no doubt that history favors the Canadiens, but that goes out the window. Come puckdrop time, there will be two teams fighting for their playoff lives.
As I sit here in my Lasalle appartment, I can already hear cars honking and noisemakers go off. The …

The times they are a-changin’.

Following Montreal’s monstrous 6-2 victory over Toronto, the Habs finally have some breathing room in the tight Eastern Conference playoff race. They sit in 7th place with 92 points, 3 points up on the Rangers and 5 points up on the Panthers. For those who started to wonder if the Canadiens might actually miss the playoffs, you can breathe a sigh of relief at this point.
Watching the game last night, I saw a team that was competing, a team that dominated from shift to shift, a team forcing turnovers and …

The importance of a first line.

Since the revolutionary idea to put our 3 best players together, to form a line (Alex Tanguay, Saku Koivu and Alex Kovalev,), the Habs have been 5-0-1 in their last 6 games, and have been playing some of their best hockey in a very long time. This line has recorded 34 points in their last 6 games which is simply remarkable and has really helped the Canadiens come together at the right time. What has really hurt the Canadiens so far this season is the fact that the Habs have …

The Shootout.

While Carey Price did his job last Saturday night against Buffalo, the shooters clearly did not. Two Canadiens tried to beat Ryan Miller five-hole along the ice. Miller made easy saves. Tomas Plekanec came closest to scoring by hitting the post with a stick side shot. We would have liked to see Chris Higgins or Sergei Kostitsyn in the shootout. Both players have great shots and quick releases.
Alex Kovalev has gone to his backhand deke once too often. Maxim Lapierre’s pee-wee move (slow-slow-fast-fast) is just plain silly (and he seems …

Cause for celebration or cause for concern?

Is the glass half full or is the glass half empty?
There are two ways to look at Montreal’s 6-3 win, Tuesday night over the Atlanta Thrashers. The optimistic part of me sees major improvement, while the pessimistic part of me sees a mediocre performance against a sub par team.
The Glass is Half Full

For the first time in a while, the Canadiens held the opposition to a respectable number of shots against (only 25 by Atlanta).
The Canadiens best players were BY FAR, their best players. They have been missing consistent scoring …

Koivu + Kovalev = Best of friends.

Let the rumors come to an end. Koivu and Kovalev are now officially best friends and not sworn enemies, as the media would like us to believe. I guess Carbonneau’s strategy of splitting our two top players wasn’t all that smart. Trust me, I know the cliché: “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” But in reality, when you shake up your eggs you can end up with none.
Last year Kovalev’s line was Montreal’s most productive, however, after an extremely slow start his linemates were moved immediately. Although Kovalev …

Canadiens on the brink of destruction.

What started out as a promising season has now turned into one of mass destruction. With 10 games remaining on the schedule, the Canadiens are on the verge of missing the playoffs in their milestone 100th season. And that’s only the beginning of the bitter disappointment that Habs fans had to face in the second half of the season.

Same old song and dance.

It’s the same old story, the same old song and dance with this edition of the Montreal Canadiens. Another 35+ shots against, another poor goaltending performance, another lackluster effort, another game with “not-so” special teams and ultimately another blown game against a team that is marginal at best. The script is becoming all too familiar and predictable. There were actually times last night when I was watching the game, when I was laughing at the performance. It just boggles my mind how a group of players this talented, could be …

Long term issues, short term solutions.

It looks bleak for the Montreal Canadiens. A multitude of problems. Four major issues have undermined the Habs this season. Although not a strong probability, there could be some short term solutions to stabilize the situation …
