Should we trust Bob Gainey?

22 March 2009 6 Comments

Bob GaineyLast night I attended the Habs/Leafs game and after a very disappointing performance, many of the fans began chanting “Carbo, Carbo, Carbo.” This disturbed me because the so-called “fans” cheering for Carbo to return, were the same fans cheering a few weeks’ back for Carbo to be fired. These people have to come to their senses and understand that even with Carbo, the Habs were losing games and getting out-shot by more than 15 every game. Also, remeber that this is the same Carbonneau we assumed had no system and lost the respect of his players.

This is what I believe. I believe that Carbonneau was most definitely the problem. I also believe that Bob Gainey is not the solution. What has Gainey done to deserve our praise? In my opinion, the only good deal that Gainey has made was trading Craig Rivet for Josh Gorges and a 1st round pick (which later turned out to be Max Pacioretty). I give all the credit to Trevor Timmins for drafting all these great players, such as P.K Subban, Carey Price, Ryan McDonough, etc., not Bob Gainey. So let’s see what Gainey has done to deserve such praise. He let Streit go, gave Roman Hamrlik Sheldon Souray’s contract, and traded Mike Ribeiro for Janne Niinimaa (which is similar to nothing)!

I honestly want these former Habs greats to stop becoming our next coaches and general managers. We should start bringing in EXPERIENCED coaches, which means no Patrick Roy and no Kirk Muller. I do not care whether the next Habs coach is French, English, or Russian; as long as he is experienced and QUALIFIED for the job I will be happy.

I disagree. Gainey is the answer, it will just take time. the players need time to adapt to new system.

I don’t know. A head coach only has so much time, and typically does lean heavily on his assistants. Mike Keenan isn’t really known as an X’s and O’s coach, but is well respected in the industry. Same goes for Gretzky, who had no real coaching experience.

So… the most important thing for a head coach to do is not “lose the room” and hold the players accountable for sticking with the system (whoever’s system it may be) and ensure that the players work hard.

As a former captain - a position that is often awarded by the team, Carbo should have had the influence to keep things under control. Not sure what went wrong.

So - it’s really up to Gainey to put together a staff that can complement the head coaches weaknesses - and then support that coach.
