Northeast Division: Buffalo keeping things interesting.

4 April 2009 No Comments

Vanek-RoyCould the Boston Bruins be headed toward a first-round playoff series with Buffalo? It’s funny, because the Bruins will actually have a say in the matter with games today against the New York Rangers, Montreal Thursday and Buffalo next Saturday, Boston will practically be hand picking its opponent.

The Sabres, four points behind the Rangers for eighth in the Eastern Conference entering today’s action, kept their hopes alive last night with a thrilling overtime win over Washington. Tim Connolly turned a Capitals turnover into the game-winning goal by Jason Pominville. Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News has the complete recap.

Opinion: The Sabres also have a game in hand, and Florida laid an egg against Atlanta. So the Sabres might be playing the best hockey of the three teams racing for eighth.

Elsewhere in the division:

•Former Ottawa head coach Craig Hartsburg think there’s a lot of blame to go around for the Senators’ failures. (Does he know the Sens’ record since he was axed?)

•Toronto was smacked around by Philadelphia.

•Winger Alex Tanguay has been a boon for the Montreal top line.
