Koivu + Kovalev = Best of friends.

24 March 2009 1 Comment

Saku Koivu and Alex KovalevLet the rumors come to an end. Koivu and Kovalev are now officially best friends and not sworn enemies, as the media would like us to believe. I guess Carbonneau’s strategy of splitting our two top players wasn’t all that smart. Trust me, I know the cliché: “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” But in reality, when you shake up your eggs you can end up with none.
Last year Kovalev’s line was Montreal’s most productive, however, after an extremely slow start his linemates were moved immediately. Although Kovalev has seen some successful moments this year, you can’t say he’s put up another Hart worthy performance.

What can I say about captain Koivu, which hasn’t been said before? The leader of our team is hard working, soft-spoken, and a well-balanced center.  Ever since he started in the league, Koivu has been paired with some of the weakest wingers in the franchises history (Ryder, Dackell, Zednik, and Petrov).

So why did it take so long to pair our two most talented players? Why didn’t our assistant captain and captain say something to the coach and the media about matching their scoring and passing skills together? Why in G-D’s name did they let the media single handedly create rumors and bad blood between them?

Beats me, but I’ll tell you what, I’m definitely happy that something good came out of our slump of a season.

Not that I am defending carbo ( I am glad he is not coaching the team anymore), but he did play the two of them together for a while. It was just before Kovalev’s holiday I think
