Giguere makes appearance for Ducks.

GiguereDucks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere made his first appearance in seven games during Saturday night’s 5-4, shootout loss to the Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena.

Giguere entered at the outset of the third period, after starter Jonas Hiller had surrendered four goals on 24 shots.

“It wasn’t going very well for Hiller — simple as that,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. “Four goals — that’s what alarms me. Some of them he didn’t really have an opportunity — rebounds where we were lax on our coverage, but I didn’t really think he was strong, with rebounds and those things.”

Giguere stopped all nine shots he saw, including a dangerous backhand bid from the slot by Coyotes captain Shane Doan with 3:17 left in the third period, before being beaten on three of four shootout attempts. Steven Reinprecht, Doan and rookie Viktor Tikhonov converted in the tiebreaker, with Tikhonov’s winner just crossing the goal line.

“I made the save and then my pad went in the net and the puck just kind of followed,” Giguere said. “Lucky, but that’s the way it goes.”

The appearance was only the fourth for Giguere since March 6.

“I’ve been practicing for a month, working out in the gym,” Giguere said. “I felt OK. I was really ready to go. It’s not the way I wanted to go in, for sure. I don’t know what’s ahead for me, but I wanted to make sure this last period would be a positive one.”
