A disappointing campaign in which Phoenix had expected to compete for a Stanley Cup playoff berth instead will end with a sixth consecutive failure to reach post-season play. … The Coyotes had appeared to be in solid position with a 24-19-5 record at the NHL All-Star break, but a 7-3 loss to the Ducks on Jan. 27 in Glendale began a 7-18-2 stretch that sunk Phoenix near the bottom of the NHL’s Western Conference. … The Coyotes have won four times in their past six games, including Thursday night’s 4-1, road triumph over the San Jose Sharks that featured 40 saves from rookie G Al Montoya. … Former Ducks G Ilya Bryzgalov is 25-31-6 for Phoenix, with a 2.97 goals-against average and .907 save percentage. … Since dropping a 4-2 decision to the Coyotes on Oct. 12 at Honda Center, the Ducks have beaten Phoenix four consecutive times, with G Jonas Hiller stopping 104 of 111 shots while recording a shutout and all four victories. … LW Shane Doan, the Coyotes captain, has enjoyed another outstanding season with 31 goals and 71 points.
