Ducks’ Carlyle has no beef with players’ actions.

Randy CarlyleWhile he is always concerned about the possibility of NHL-imposed suspensions that might stem from incidents such as the one at the end of Sunday night’s 3-2 loss to the San Jose Sharks at Honda Center, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle had no real quarrel with the actions of any of his players.

Right wing Teemu Selanne and centers Ryan Getzlaf and Andrew Ebbett drew 10-minute misconduct penalties, while Getzlaf, Ebbett and right wing Corey Perry combined for five minors. Jonathan Cheechoo and Marc-Edouard Vlasic of the Sharks got 10-minute misconducts, with Vlasic, Joe Thornton and goaltender Brian Boucher each receiving a minor.

All of the penalties resulted from a melee near the San Jose net after time expired, with the Ducks having failed to score a tying goal despite spending the game’s final 80 seconds controlling the puck in the offensive zone.

“That’s very difficult when you’re in a situation that we’re in, and as determined as we were in playing in the last period, once they got the (go-ahead) goal,” Carlyle said after Tuesday’s practice at Honda Center. “Those things are hard for you, as a coach, to go in and say, ‘Temper it down.’ Emotions are flying. Your own emotions are going off the scale.

“Would you like them to have not taken the 10-minute misconducts? I think they were victims of circumstances, and those are hard to take back. We talked as a group. We’ve talked on numerous occasions about letting our emotions control our situation. If you read the placards that are in the dressing room, there are a bunch of them that refer to that.”

The NHL appears unlikely to hand out supplementary discipline to members of either team.

“I would have heard by now,” Ducks general manager Bob Murray said Tuesday morning.
