Here’s a quick bit picked up from Larry Brooks’ column in the New York Post yesterday:

“Tim Thomas, who signed a four-year, $20 million extension with the Bruins (Friday), will be considered on an over-35 contract even though he doesn’t turn 35 until April 15. For contract purposes, the player’s age is calculated on the June 30 before the season the deal goes into effect.”

Opinion: This alters my thinking on this deal a bit. I’ve been trying to let it sink in before writing at length about the Thomas deal, but this is a bit disturbing because now you’re talking about having a 37-, 38-year-old back-up goaltender with a $5 million cap hit and no way to get out from under it barring a trade. That’s not ideal, to say the least.
